IRAN QUASHES U.S. PLANS IN IRAQ
Iran tells Iraqi prime minister: 'Get rid of America'.
17 October 2010
Tehran's influence in Baghdad politics described by western official as 'nothing less than a strategic defeat' for US.
Fears over Iran's influence after secret talks involving Syria, Hezbollah and the highest authorities in Shia Islam.
US wanted Ayad Allawi in power. But he has been meeting all the wrong people.
Allawi held talks on Iraq with Saudi King Abdullah. He also talked to Saudi intelligence chief Prince Muqrin bin Abdul Aziz and Saudi ambassador to Washington Adel al-Jubeir. Allawi accused Iran of rocking the boat in Middle East: "We know that unfortunately Iran is trying to wreak havoc on the region, and trying to destabilise the region by destabilising Iraq, and destabilising Lebanon and destabilising the Palestinian issue. And this is where unfortunately Iraq and the rest of the Middle East is falling victim to these terrorists, who are definitely financed by Iran."
Ayad Allawi was installed in Baghdad by US in 2004. Allawi was appointed prime minister by President Bush. However, Iraqi public pressure forced Allawi's removal from the office after it was discovered that he had been working with the CIA. Prime Minister Allawi was derided as an American puppet. Iraqis could not tolerate the CIA's new stooge. Allawi had to step down. Allawi was called 'Saddam without a moustache'. He had backing of MI6 and the CIA.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s renewed grasp on power has been brought about by the Middle East’s most powerful Shia players.
Iran had brokered a deal between Sadr and Maliki and had recently used its sway with Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon in an attempt to shut out US input into a new government.
